A Message from Dr. Kwan & Dr. Hsu regarding the COVID-19 outbreak.

May 11, 2020

We hope this message finds you and your family in good health. Our community has been through a lot over the last few months, and many of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines. While many things have changed, one thing at Nu Smile Roseville Dental has remained the same: our constant commitment to your safety.

As you have surely seen during your visits to our office, infection control has always been a top priority for our practice. Our strict processes have consistently made the care you receive at Nu Smile Roseville Dental both safe and comfortable.

Our office follows infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We continue to closely monitor the recommendations of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued.

When it is time for your next appointment, you may see some changes along with our already strict infection control protocols. For example:

  • Our office will communicate with you ahead of your appointment to ask some screening questions. You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office.
  • When entering the office, we will ask you to use hand sanitizer which we will supply. You will also find some in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed.
  • You may see that our reception area will no longer offer magazines, and other items which cannot be properly disinfected. You are encouraged to bring your own iPad, reading materials, etc.
  • Should you choose, you may wait in your car and be texted / called when we are ready to bring you directly to the treatment area.
  • Appointments will be managed to allow for proper social distancing between patients. That might mean that you will be offered slightly limited options for scheduling your appointment.
  • We will do our best to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the office at any one time.

We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you, and every patient, safe in our practice. We will be reaching out to all of you in the first week of June to start the re-appointing process again.

In addition, at that time, to make an appointment, you may also call our office at 916-780-9688 or click here to contact us.

Thank you for being our patient and part of the Nu Smile family. We value your trust and loyalty and look forward to welcoming back our patients, neighbors and friends in the safest way possible.  We truly miss you all and cannot wait to catch up with all of you!

UPDATED March 21

The California Dental Association strongly recommends that dentists practicing in California suspend all in-person dental care with the exception of emergency treatment, until further notice. Emergency treatment in our context is defined as infections or potentially life threatening conditions.

This is a modification of our original announcement to our Nu Smile Dental family sent out a week ago that our closure would only span approximately 2 weeks. This information and decision is based on the latest information available from the California Dental Association as of 6am PST this morning.

The reasoning behind this is to minimize the risks of COVID-19 exposure to our guests, the Nu Smile Dental Care Team, and to not use up critical supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE), which are in high demand and low supply for Healthcare workers battling this disease on the front lines.

This is in step with Gov. Newsom’s new statewide shelter-in-place order issued Thursday, March 19, ordering all individuals living in California to stay home or at their place of residence until further notice.

If this situation changes, we will update you according here or on our Instagram page.

Thank you so much for understanding during these challenging times.

----------------------------------

As you know, Dr.'s Kwan and Hsu here at Nu Smile Roseville have always prided ourselves placing our best foot forward in the best interests of our guests.

Nothing would sadden us more than to place our Nu Smile dental families at risk or inconvenience. As you know, we have recently been inundated with hourly news updates about the COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Governor Gavin Newsome made the announcement earlier this afternoon that it was recommended to have seniors 65+ under home isolation unless absolutely necessary.

Adding to that the recent school closures in the Placer region heightened the importance of Social Distancing and not helping spread the virus.

After grappling with the issue over this past weekend, we have made the hard decision to temporarily suspend operations for all elective non - emergency treatment. This was not a decision that was easy for us to make. The weekend was spent reviewing all the research available on what we know about the COVID-19 virus, it's behavior, most of transmission, among other characteristics.

As you may all know now, the COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads by breathing, coughing, or sneezing, and hence the minimum 6 foot distance recommendation. It never truly fits the bill of an aerosol agent. In a dental office equipment setting, however, there always exists a chance that aerosols can be generated, increasing the chance to spread out superseded the COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2 virus.

It is for this reason, that we feel, in the best interests of our Nu Smile Dental guests, that we do our part for the community in the overall fight to keep this virus from spreading as fast. The faster we can keep this from multiplying, the quicker we can get this under control as a whole.

We understand this decision will create many inconveniences for many of you, and trust us when we say this was not an easy decision to make, but we feel this is the right ethical move to make for all of our safety at this time. This decision applies to all elective dental treatment and will not apply to true dental emergencies. We will always be here to address infection, pain, or discomfort driven dental emergencies, as we must do our part to minimize any patients going to the emergency rooms at the local hospital, where they may be facing limited number of beds available to treat the wave that is coming.

We sincerely hope that we are wrong about this potential upcoming outbreak, and if so, this would have been a small inconvenience for elective dental treatment for a short period of time. However, if the alternative as suspected is true, we would have helped minimize super-spreading any potential guest's viruses.

The California Dental Association has not made their recommendations at this time as to what should be done, but we want to make the first move. Thank you so much for understanding.

If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 916 780-9688 or reach out to us here on Facebook or Instagram.

Thank you and to yours in health,

Arthur Kwan DMD / Sally Hsu DDS
